We all need hope. When all hope is gone, so too is our motivation, our creativity and our enthusiasm for the future. Too many people in our world are void of hope. They see things as they are and cannot visualise them being any different. They thus become resigned to their circumstances.

Two Fridays ago, I attended a meeting organised by some students at Trinity Grammar to make a statement that violence against women was never acceptable. There were about 300 students (including several from Carey) from schools in the Kew area.

Many years ago when I was at primary school, I was taught that ‘sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.’ The first part is true, but the second part is not true. For words can hurt – often leaving lasting scars.
