Chaplain’s Corner – Junior School

Last week I had the wonderful privilege of spending the week at Toonallook, one of my favourite destinations, with a Year 6 class. Yes, it was hard to leave my family and other responsibilities behind, but it was also such a great opportunity to journey alongside a group of students in one of God’s most beautiful places of creation. I had many chances to stop and savour the experience – not only the breath-taking views, sunrises, sunsets, dolphins and scenes, but also meaningful engagement with some really interesting staff and students. One of the highlights was the day I spent with a smaller expo group of boys in the Mitchell River National Park. For that time, we walked, sat in the sunshine, pondered life for the First Australians in that area, marvelled at the ecosystem of a rainforest in the midst of dry bush land, closely inspected plants and insects, spent time in silence, laughed, talked, and smiled. And there were no computers, no television, no iPads, no electronics, no magazines and no one once said the ‘b’ word – ‘bored’! It was magic! What a wonderful gift God has given us in His creation – let us stop every so often to enjoy it, to savour it, to gain refreshment and to set us back on the right path again.

Praise Him, sun and moon;
    praise Him, shining stars.
Praise Him, highest heavens,
    and the waters above the sky.
Let them all praise the name of the Lord!
He commanded, and they were created;
    by His command they were fixed in their places forever,
    and they cannot disobey.
Praise the Lord from the earth,
    sea monsters and all ocean depths;
lightning and hail, snow and clouds,
    strong winds that obey His command.
Praise Him, hills and mountains,
    fruit trees and forests;
all animals, tame and wild,
    reptiles and birds.
Praise Him, kings and all peoples,
    princes and all other rulers;
young women and young men,
    old people and children too.
Let them all praise the name of the Lord!
H
is name is greater than all others;
His glory is above earth and heaven.
Psalm 148:3–13
