Year 6 Excursion to Parliament House
Year 6DF students ventured into the city on the tram for a visit to Parliament House first thing on Monday morning. The rain threatened to dampen the students’ enthusiasm as they caught the tram but before long it had ceased and the students entered the world of politics. They were all in awe of the splendor of the building, especially the golden roof. The real highlight of their visit was taking on the different roles of the Legislative Assembly and debating issues in the Chamber.

Year 3 Adventure at Portsea
The new site for the first camp experience for our Year 3 students met expectations. The students showed plenty of courage as they soared high on rope courses and the flying fox. Excitement was clearly evident as they unearthed the remains of a dinosaur and then reconstructed it. Fresh air agreed with all as they enjoyed the beach combing activity, and new friendships were formed in co-operative activities. Fortunately, the weather was also kind to our Year 3s. The sun actually made an appearance on Monday and the wind decided to have a holiday on Tuesday, providing a beautifully calm and flat sea. All the staff were impressed with the behaviour of the students, and all slept well!

The Summer Concert
The annual JSK Summer Concert was held last night and was well supported by parents. As usual it was a feast of music and a real celebration of our talented musicians and the breadth of our program. It was also tinged with a little sadness, as we watched our Year 6 students perform in their last concert for the Junior School.

Exciting New Uniform Options for Girls
I have often been asked by prospective parents in the past ‘why isn’t there a pant option for our girls in the uniform?’ So I was very pleased to be informed recently that this will no longer be the case from next year. I would like to clarify for parents, the uniform for girls is not changing, rather there are more options for girls with the inclusion of pants and shorts from 2017. In Summer, the current Carey grey shorts and striped shirt are added as an option to be worn. As the girls develop in the later primary years, they are given the option of wearing the pale grey shorts that are especially cut for girls, and the striped shirt with pleated back, again especially cut for girls. This is in line with the same policy of allowing the older students to transition from the pinafore to the skirt. In Winter, the girls are allowed to wear the charcoal pants, with the girl’s cream shirt. Again, in the Upper Primary Years, as the girls develop, they can wear the tailored pants especially designed for the girls. Judging from the enthusiasm of the students who modelled the options to the students at our Assembly last week, and the reception they received, this is a long overdue initiative.

A great book, a wonderful Christmas gift idea!
There is no doubt that one of the most rewarding gifts to give and receive at Christmas is a good book. So imagine if you were able to pick up a quality book at the fraction of the shelf price this season! Some of our Year 6 students, with the support of a very generous parent, are selling brand new and recently released books that would make for ideal gifts for all the family. These books will be on sale before and after school next week, or until sold, outside Junior School Reception. The money raised will be donated to the Orangutan Foundation International Australia. Orangutan protection has been a focus for Year 6 for several years. Please see Mrs Lisa Stewart for more information. Our thanks to Mrs Kim Tornya for this very generous donation.
