Positive Learning at Carey

Empowering learners to give them a sense of hope for the future.

At Carey, we develop wise, independent, motivated learners. We focus on the whole child and help each student to build a sense of purpose and belonging at Carey and beyond.

Futurists believe that in order to prepare young people to thrive in our rapidly changing world, education needs to evolve to the point where students are given explicit opportunities to develop their personal attributes. For this reason, we have developed Carey’s Attributes of a Positive Learner, informed by the work of The Foundation for Young Australians, the World Economic Forum and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. We also worked with world experts like Professor Bill Lucas to guide our thinking and the framework we use at Carey. At the heart of this development was identifying three key ‘ways of being’, which help to define the nine Attributes. We know that people of all ages should enhance their relationships, expand their thinking and consider the best pathways to self-management.

Our commitment to developing the Carey Positive Learner Attributes alongside traditional learning is growing as we develop expertise and strategies in this exciting new era of education. The common language of the Attributes is widely used at school by staff and students alike, and both refer to the Attributes they have activated when learning every day. We design educational experiences that enhance academic learning and equally develop the Attributes of the learner.

We know that Carey students who understand themselves as people and learners will face our complex world with a sense of hope and a determination to have a positive impact. As a wise Year 11 student once asked me, ‘What’s the point of knowledge without heart?’
